Blazer: Rag & Bone (old, but very similar here) | Tee: Current/Elliott c/o | Boyfriend Shorts: H&M (similar here) | Shoes: Steven | Necklaces: Albeit & Jennifer Zeuner c/o | Tote: Vintage GucciNYC has been so incredibly hot lately that as soon as we took these pics, my blazer came right off until I escaped back into an air conditioned room. With that said, even with the current temps being in the 90’s, you will never find me leaving home without a blazer, scarf or thin sweater in my bag. For me, there is nothing worse than waiting in a 110 degree train station and then walking into a 60 degree train car. It probably feels great to most, but I’m the annoying girl who is always freezing, so to me, it’s torture. Don’t even get me started on the 85 % humidity and the incredible hair weather we’ve been having, but that’s for another post.
Speaking of hair, I have decided to attempt (key word) to grow out my natural hair color (a darker, sandy blonde) and start from scratch. Last week, when I walked into my hair appointment feeling slightly frustrated, I pulled up about 10 pictures of my “ideal hair color,” which included one too many pictures of Blake Lively, and discussed my options with my hair girl. She explained that in order to achieve the look I really want, ideally, I should grow out my hair and then begin to highlight it on my natural color. Like I said, it’s something I’ve been wanting to do for awhile, but to be honest, I wasn’t really sure how to go about it. I’m still going to visit the salon every 6 weeks to have her blend/tone my hair as it grows out, but even so, I will have to deal with the dreaded “root situation.” Maybe there’s a way to make it seem like it’s part of my look, like Whitney Port has going on here? Hmmm…wishful thinking? Hopefully I’ll be able to stick it out without feeling like a hot mess for the next few months. Please wish me luck!
Fellow blondes, have any of you have done this dreaded process? Any tips or tricks?

dear helena,
" patience " is the word! after 10 years of being blonde i decided to go back to the roots. instead of colouring it (like that you wont have your own, natural hair colour) my colourist suggested to do a glossing. aveda has this system. it lasts 4-5 weeks but as i sad the colour is not permanent and it allows your own hair to grow naturally and healthy. so maybe you should ask or find a hairdresser who is using aveda products.
your outfit is great as always

Great look! I know what you mean about the air con. I visited NYC 3 years ago in July and while it was boiling outside, the shops were freezing. But I liked it 🙂 air con isn't the same in uk..

I have gone through the process! My roots were a couple shades darker than my colored hair, so the difference was quite obvious. I didn't really mind it, it gave me an edgy look. But sometimes I wanted to look more put-together for, say, my friend's wedding, so I had demi-permanent color put on my hair. Finally when I had grown my roots up to my collarbones, I had all the colored hair cut off. I couldn't be happier with how natural my hair looks without the added color!
I'm in love with your boyfriend shorts!

A darker color would suit you! I think it would really look lovely on you. Sure, it'll be a difficult process, but I think if you keep blending your roots in with the rest of your hair, it should be fine!

I'm loving this striped look! Congratulations on growing your hair out, it can be a super scary process. I use to dye my hair dirty blonde in H.S and when I decided to grow out my natural brown hair it was the most terrifying process, that said, my hair has never been healthier and all I do now when I want to change it up is add some highlights. Wish you luck!

I have naturally dark blonde hair, but I always wanted it to be lighter. It's so frustrating to keep the color "just right." You might try to dye the ends something within a shade or two of your natural color and highlight from there.
As for me? I ended up with dark auburn hair haha.

I too am a naturally sandy/dirty blonde color and i've been bleaching and coloring it for years. I wanted to start fresh: new hair that hasnt been damaged by bleach or color, but I too have a hard time when my roots come in…REALLY dark. I feel better with a lighter color. I would love to watch you through this process and maybe inspire me to do the same. Good luck sweets.

Hi Helena, A few years ago I decided to stop coloring my hair and attempt to grow in my natural color. At the time, my hair was very light blonde with my natural color being dark blond with flecks of gold – similar to what you described for yourself. I thought the growing process would be a lot more arduous than it actually was. Once you get past the first month, you will feel a lot better! I did use one trick that I think helped a lot- every few days I mixed a pinch of powdered grape Kool-aid in with my shampoo. The purple toned down the brassiness of the light blonde which made my hair look less stark against my dark roots. No one every believes me but the Kool-aid trick is the best! Good luck!!

Not a blond growing it out, but I'm a brunette growing out my grey. Really frustrating process, but I'm so tired of coloring to cover. I'm hoping to get better texture and healthy hair back, so each time I'm tempted to give in and go color, I just remind myself why I'm doing it. I've also reached out to readers for hints on styling, but half up half down seems to be the popular response. Good luck.
