Hair Talk

Hi!
As I mentioned a few weeks ago, I’m in the process of growing out my hair in an attempt to start from scratch. I was actually a bit surprised by how many of you commented/emailed me that you went through the same grueling process and that it was incredibly worth it in the end. I also got a few of you who said you’ve been wanting to do the same thing, but were afraid of feeling less attractive as your hair got darker and you were going to follow my hair journey.
My Update: right now I have about 1 inch of hair growth/roots, which is probably the longest I’ve had since I started coloring it (mostly myself, occasionally at a salon for touchups, toning and highlights). It’s been about three weeks since I last visited the salon and my colorist told me to try to make it to at least 5-6 weeks before I come back. As of now, it’s not bothering me too much, but I’m afraid that as my roots get longer and longer, it’s going to get difficult. I’m not used to having that much “darkness” around my face and for those of you who’ve been blonde, you know, us blondes can get a bit crazy with that.
So, I’m using the above photos as my inspiration. As my hair continues to grow out, I plan to embrace the blonde ombre trend and hope it can look even half as good as the photos above. Fingers crossed I can stick it out!
On another note, after a lot of back and forth, I decided to get a Keratin Hair Treatment.  It’s been something I’ve been wanting to do for awhile, but was concerned about whether it would damage my hair or not. I did a lot of research, both online and seeking out people who have had it done, and the feedback was about 98% positive. I’m going on week two now and not to be dramatic, but it’s been slightly life changing. I’ve never been somebody who had “wash & go” air dry hair and now I do! My hair doesn’t feel damaged AT ALL, in fact, I feel like it’s going to make it healthier since I’m barely using any heat to my hair. The best part? I can be in 99% humidity and my hair does not frizz up. For someone who had the possibility of looking like Lion King in bad weather situations, this is such exciting stuff! If you’re interested in hearing more about it, let me know and I’ll do a proper post.
Thanks for listening to my hair woes!
xoxo,
Helena

Good luck on the hair thing! It took me two years to grow my hair back to a heathy condition (during the whole process I had to cu them a few times to keep the hair healthy)!

    I love Lauren's hair, she's beautiful.
    Good luck with yours!

I did this last year. I was a very light blonde and my natural hair color is a sandy, dark blonde as well, and I wanted to use my base color to then do a subtle blonde ombré. I love it now, and it's so easy and natural, but it takes a long time and requires a lot of buns and updos to disguise. I'd also recommend buying some dry shampoo, because I found that that made the difference not quite as stark. You should also go every so often and get staggered highlights put in so it isn't just a straight line across your head and a trim, to keep it growing faster and have less to grow out. Finally, take Biotin and vitamins that are good for your hair, nails, and skin! Okay, done with my spiel, and good luck!

Where did you get you Keratin treatment from? I have been trying to find a good spot in NYC!

I grew out my blond to my natural med/light brown. It was utter agony, but once it got part way, it started to look amazing, and I had so many people ask what stylist had done my ombre. I did this without any highlights or coloring by me or my stylist during the grow out process. There were days it was hard and I almost called for an appointment, but now I am so happy that I had patience.

OMG I just did the Keratin treatment and to be honest my hair has way more volume then ever. And I have a thin limpy hair, it is truly life changing. I cannot wait to see your journey. me I'm trying to get rid of the relaxer in my hair. Good luck.

Yay! super excited for you! I went through the same thing last year, it was really tough until it got to the middle and I accidentally ended up with ombre look which fell into trend. Now it's all gone and it was oh so worth it so hang in there.

The key, in those pics, and for me was to keep one really blonde piece in front, close to the face. It sort of pulls the whole thing together.

I would love to hear more about your experience with the keratin treatment. I've been considering one myself.

I am going through this exact same thing right now. I have several inches of brown roots and I am so happy that the ombre trend is in right now. I am still a little uncomfortable about it though. I think I look more stunning with darker hair or blonde hair (which photographs well). My hair is a normal brown….maybe a little on the lighter end (but still not to be confused with blonde). I started growing mine out because I all of a sudden began having allergic reactions to hair dye. I even had to go to the doctor to get steroid shots because of the massive lumps on the back of my head. After that, I decided it wasn't worth it and I am going back to my natural hair color. I am a little sad about it because I really enjoy changing up my hair color….usually 2-3 times a year. Ultimately, I know my hair will be healthier (the bleach from the blonde kills my hair), but in the meantime, it is a struggle to feel confident. Especially when so many others are unaware of the ombre trend and think you have major roots. Anyway, I'm glad to see this post and it helps me feel not alone.

    XOXO Jess

Got the Keratin treatmeat mid June and I absolutely love it! I can let my hair air dry and it's not frizzy! I can straighten my hair in 10 min and I have hair that falls to my mid back. It is indeed life-changing.

    Great post.

  • Alexandra

I feel like I'm living your identical hair life! I started growing out my natural color a few years ago, now I'm back to just highlighting occasionally, but it's so worth it! My sister & I have both been through it and you're be so much happier with less maintenance in the end.

I also got a Brazilian blowout in June and I agree, it sounds crazy but it's 100% life changing!

    Good luck! Love your blog!

The keratin hair treatment seems to fit my frizzy hair perfectly, please make a post about it with before and after pictures 😀

went through the same thing last year! i'm brunette and decided to try going blonde and was actually surprised at how much I liked and embraced the in-between phase (here's my hair in-between http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ihSG5oNAbQI/ULERYTMvkII/AAAAAAAAEvU/N04244txzCU/s640/3C2B9C90-D98B-42D6-BFE7-A8E63D1717D5.JPG ) i know you can do it! good luck dear <3

When I got pregnant, I knew I wouldn't be bleaching my hair anymore and went through the same thing. I actually went to Mary at Arrojo (HEAVENLY colorist) and she put in some darker tones so that it would grow out well. It's kind of a natural ombre. You might suggest something similar to your colorist.

  • Diana

Super cute hair styles, can't wait to see what you end up with.

Absolutely, Keratin is a good place for hair making, i did my wedding hair style there and with my wedding gown from weddingbuy.co.uk

I'm in the exact position you're in and am thinking about getting a Brazilian blow out again. The only thing stopping me is the fact that I lost all of my volume last time I did it and my hair got greasy much, much quicker. Please do a post on your experience and favorite hair care products 🙂

  • Sarah

Good on you! I would love to do the same but I have some bright hair dyes that need using up – and bleached hair haha. Look forward to the progress! xx

Going through the same thing right now!! I just want healthier hair that's lower maintenance. I really stopped bleaching the fuck out of last November, added some lowlights so that as it grows out it's not as blunt ombre. It's definitely worth it though, I feel like my hair is much healthier!

Ooh, I can't wait to hear more about this process! I have been struggling the last couple years with what I should do – I'm a darker blonde naturally and dye it light blonde but it's so damaged and breaking that I need to make some sort of a change – I've contemplated dying it darker but maybe growing it out is the way to go! Good luck! I can only imagine how daunting it must seem at first. And I'd love to hear more about the keratin treatment! I'm intrigued!

hey helena, definitely very interested in a real post! the nyc humidity makes me want to get one, too! xx

  • Carey King

Hey- this is a few days late to comment but I've lived through this whole hair process. I grew mine out and now mine is pretty much a combo of the pics above. Biggest key now with my blonde is that I highlight instead of full colour and NEVER use foils. My mom is a hairdresser and truthful facts- hair dressers use Foils over a cap to highlight because it takes longer and they can charge more but if you use the cap the highlights are thinner and look more natural, plus I only need to do my colour every 3-4 months. OH another colour trick my mom uses for me- we don't use bleach we use something called Super lift, it doesnt damage my hair as much.. Best of luck, being a blonde is tricky;)

  • Dani
