As often as possible, I try to share my favorite spots in the NYC area. From my favorite hotels to the best pizza to the most child friendly dining spots. Today, comes a highly requested one: where to buy plants in NYC! However, I also added three NJ locations, one of which my friends swore by. Sometimes, it’s worth it to make the trip for a larger variety and most likely, better prices.
Where to Buy Plants in NYC + NJ
14TH STREET GARDEN CENTER
Address: Jersey City, NJ (793 Jersey Ave)
This family-run garden center has a wide selection of indoor foliage and outdoor blooming flowers. From quart size annuals perfect for window boxes, to fresh locally grown herbs to large bamboo plants. 14th Street Garden Center keeps a full selection of plants year round, to suit your city living. Plus they even pot your plants for you and can deliver them too!
CHELSEA GARDEN CENTER
Address: Red Hook (444 Van Brunt Street) & Williamsburg (87 Havemeyer Street)
Long-time market with seasonal hours selling flowers, shrubs, planters & furnishings for the garden. Its new Williamsburg location features a broad selection of nursery stock, pottery, containers, garden teak furniture, and acclimated tropical houseplants fresh from Florida and Hawaii, along with a completely stocked garden store for your shopping pleasure. Chelsea Garden Center is known throughout New York as the city’s premiere specialist in all aspects of urban gardening and landscape design, providing New Yorkers with countless design ideas and garden services to fit their gardening needs for the past 33 years.
GREEN FINGERS MARKET
Address: Nolita (5 Rivington Street)
Designed by Japanese plant artist Satoshi Kawamoto, this plant nursery’s modern-meets-industrial vibe showcases an array of succulents and ferns blanketing the surfaces of wooden boxes, bookshelves, and wagons. For those still learning the art of plant care, Green Fingers Market’s mason jar terrariums or bigger versions in glass domes include artificial or preserved plants that require no care. While its prices can often reflect those of a leafy art exhibit, it’s worth making the trip if looking for DIY inspiration.
J ROSE WHOLESALE FLOWERS
Address: 117 West 28th Street.
This addition is more for flowers than plants, but I had to include it. Their flowers, especially roses, selection is to-die-for! Whenever I’m in the area, I make a pit stop to get a few things for our home.
KINGS COUNTY NURSERIES
Address: Prospect Lefferts Gardens (625 New York Avenue)
One of Brooklyn’s largest garden centers with 20,000 square feet of yard supplies, seeds, trees, shrubs, sod, tools & pottery. Kings County Nurseries is known for its Brooklyn Residential & Commercial Landscaping services, as well as its all natural & organic soil for superior plant growth. Along with its great selection of quality Tropical House Plants, Kings County Nurseries’ top tips to achieving a healthy & thriving garden helps its customers to make proper plant & supplies purchases for their individual garden spaces.
METROPOLITAN PLANT & FLOWER EXCHANGE
Address: West Orange (471 Mt Pleasant Ave)
One of my closest friends, whose plant opinion I take very seriously, deemed this as her favorite place. I asked her if it was worth making a trip for and she assured me that it was. We cannot personally vouch for it, but I fully trust her. In addition to its West Orange location, you may also find your flowers and plants in Fort Lee & Paramus.
METROPOLITAN FARM
Address: Closter, NJ (119 Hickory Ln)
Related to the above, the property of Metropolitan Farm is recognized as the oldest working farm in the State of New Jersey. For over 30 years, Metropolitan Farm has worked to discover the best growth of perennials in Northern NJ – what can survive bitter cold winters & thrive during hot summers. Whether you’re a master gardener or just starting your first vegetable garden, Metropolitan Farm staff is there to help & point you in the right direction. Bonus – they raise chickens & sell farm fresh eggs!
NOBLE PLANTS
Address: 106A West 28th Street.
This is one of Keith’s favorite places to get plants in the NYC & Brooklyn area. In general, take a walk down the Flower District in Chelsea. There are a ton of places, but definitely stop by Noble Plants, owned by a husband and wife who’ve been there for a very long time. Aside from plants, the Flower District is filled with tons of flowers, making it the go-to place for most New Yorkers when they’re looking to fill their home with greens and color.
PLANTSHED
Address: Upper West Side (209 W 96th Street)
Arrangements from an eco-minded florist with a sustainable greenhouse, plus gardening services. PlantShed’s facility houses the best growing conditions for both indoor and outdoor plant varieties. Its rooftop greenhouse allows for the curation of a gallery of native grasses, dramatic evergreens, blooming annuals, and a dense forest of tropical plants. PlantShed also offers an ever-evolving pottery collection, suitable for any space you’re looking to add potted plants within.
SPROUT HOME
Address: Williamsburg (59 Grand Street)
Spacious Brooklyn offshoot location of its Chicago-based garden center, selling a variety of flowers, plants, & planters. Spout Home offers innovative floral arrangements from its in-house designers for all occasions; including custom-orders, events, and commercial styling. Its talented plant designers offer cutting-edge garden installations to your home or business, whether it’s starting from scratch to adding accents to an existing space.
URBAN GARDEN CENTER
Address: East Harlem (1640 Park Avenue)
Sprawling family-owned garden resource for plants, seeds, sod, tools, accessories & firewood. Urban Garden Center prides itself on using environmentally responsible methods to running the garden center, striving to keep its organic plants locally-grown along with the proper supplies one would need to maintain a thriving garden oasis. Urban Garden Center is open daily all year round. Also, it provides local delivery to those in the NYC metro area.
If you’re in the NYC area and think that I’m missing a good addition, please share!
