The Best Children’s Books

The Best Childrens BooksWhat are some of the best children’s books you’ve read? We have some of our favorite classics like all of the books by Eric Carle, which are on constant rotation in our home. Even though we have quite a large collection of books, many are for little itty babies and we end up reaching for the same ten, over and over again. On a quest to find some of the best children’s books out there, I asked all of you and got back some wonderful answers from mothers, grandmothers, teachers and from everyone in between  (as always – you guys are the best).

Below are the books that got recommended over and over again! I’m pretty excited to add some of these to Nate’s holiday list and to gift some of them to my favorite kiddos.

My boys’ favourite book, hands down, was Man on the Moon (A Day in the Life of Bob). They never tired of it and still talk about it to this day!

Goodnight Goodnight Construction Site is a new favorite and we love Just Me and My Dad by Mercer Mayer! Although we have most of these, there are a few I’ve never heard of! Bookmarked this page 🙂

Growing up I loved The Rainbow Fish by Marcus Pfister, all of the other books in the ‘If you give a mouse a cookie’ series (there’s also ‘if you give a moose a muffin’, and ‘if you give a pig a pancake’). Curious George was also a favorite 🙂

The Hairy Maclary series by Lynley Dodd was a favourite in our household – filled with wonderful rhyme, beautiful illustrations and endearing animal characters. My son’s favourite character was Slinky Malinki, the mischievous cat. As our son got older, books by Roald Dahl were a favourite – George’s Marvellous Medicine, the BFG, The Witches, Matilda, James and the Giant Peach and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Not only is the Gruffalo such a good book, but it’s on Netflix!! There is a mini movie for it. It’s beautiful art like the illustrations in the book and famous actors for the voices. The same author also wrote Room on the Broom, which is the best book too! There is also an awesome mini movie on Netflix for this too. I bet Nate will love watching them!

I haven’t come across some of the books on this list, so thanks for sharing. I’ll have to look into whether our local library has them, or I might buy them 🙂

Great options and as a mom of 3, I totally agree with these (everything except Pete the Cat, which my kids love but I can’t stand reading!) I’d also add Extra Yarn, The Black Rabbit, I Want My Hat Back, Circle and The Cave – and anything by Mac Barnett and or Jon Klassen

Such a good list! We have about half and our favorites are Pete the Cat, Llama llama and Knufflebunny! Ironically, my first apartment on my own in Brooklyn was a few blocks away from the laundromat in Knufflebunny over in Park Slope ha!
